Questions from Jacob

Thursday, August 13th, 2009
Here are some questions that I received from Jacob on Facebook
1. As far as your stand on abortion, do you support the states making their own decisions on abortions without pressure from the federal government (legislative or judicial) or do you support federal regulation?

I support each state to make the decision

2. What is your position on state sovereignty as a whole?

I believe in the 10th Amendment and that right now the federal government is too overreaching into states rights. This is a form of state capitalism and why not have 50 plans that are being used at the same time to see what works.

3. What do you think about the authority of the federal judiciary in relation to state laws?

The Constitution gives certain powers to the federal government and reserves the rest for the states. Therefore, while the Constitution states that the federal government is supreme with regard to those powers expressly or implicitly delegated to it, the states remain supreme in matters reserved to them. Each government is sovereign in its own right. (I pulled this off of the US courts website but why try to recreate the wheel when this explains my opinion so well)

4. What is your position on the 17th Amendment?

I believe that Senators should be elected by the people of the state not the state legislature. It should be up to the state as to how they are elected as long as the person elected was only able to serve 2 terms of 6 years. I also believe that a person elected should commit to complete the full term. If that person chooses to leave early the position should be filled by the same method the position was filled in the first place.
I hope this will answer your questions. If you need to ask me follow up questions please let me know.

Ask yourself a question

Monday, August 10th, 2009

When a politician offers a new program ask yourself a question. Will this program free me from the need of the government or make me more dependant on it?
